Origin of the Rally Possum
The Rally Possum phenomenon began on May 7, 2016, during a baseball game at LSU’s Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field, against the Arkansas Razorbacks. LSU was trailing 9-1 in the fifth inning and still down 9-4 in the seventh when a baby possum wandered onto the outfield, interrupting play. Arkansas players tried to corner it, but the possum evaded them until the LSU grounds crew captured and removed it.
This unexpected visitor sparked a dramatic turnaround. LSU rallied, scoring four runs in the ninth inning to tie the game 9-9, and won 10-9 in the 10th inning on an Arkansas error. The LSU Director of Fan Experience, Jason Suitt, flashed “Rally Possum” on the stadium scoreboard, birthing a cultural phenomenon. The possum became a symbol of comeback victories, with fans creating T-shirts, stuffed possums, and a Twitter account (@realrallypossum).
The 2016 Rally Possum inspired a 12-2 run over LSU’s next 14 games, including a sweep of Arkansas, series wins over Notre Dame and Tennessee, and a victory over No. 1 Florida. The team earned a National Seed in the NCAA Tournament but fell to Coastal Carolina in the Super Regional. Despite not reaching the College World Series, the possum made the 2016 season memorable.
The birth of Rally Toss'em (2025)
LSU was losing 3-0 to Tennessee in the bottom of the 9th. A student threw a ball on the field in protest right at the start of the bottom of the 9th. The umpire had the kid thrown out. LSU rallied to tie 3-3 with two outs and then walked it off with a 3-run bomb! This will go down in LSU cannon for ever as the birth of the Rally Toss'em!
